I had been many times asked to do something. Few months ago, my boss asked me to do something. he delegate a job to me: to be an MC for a weekly occasion. What happened that week was that I was so busy doing other works day and nights. When it came the day the occasion was held, then I gave messages to other members to invite them to come to the Programme. Unfortunately some members don't bring their telephone and others are haviing other programs. I know that was my fault.
But the problem was I had been asked to do something and that time I was blamed by my boss for doing the delegated job badly. That time I was so depressed and felt so demotivated, and a kind of rebell. Since that time, my relation with my boss is not so good, that cause the barrier between us. Communication is getting worse between me and my boss. So, here, as a self reminder for me, whenever I want to delegate a job to other people, I have to know those 5 rules:
1. Giving the right authority for the right responsibility
2. a manager should willing to accept mistakes made by the subordinates
3. the manager should direct his subordinate what to do, how to do them
4. manager should willing to discuss with the subordinates to solve any problems in settling the given task.
5. manager must monitor the progress of his subordinate.
Caution! If you dont do any of this 5 rules, you might find your subordinates unable to do the works easily and this will cause him demotivated. He might even rebel.
Remember that DELEGATING A TASK IS SIMILAR TO ASKING YOUR SUBORDINATE TO PLAY A PARTICULAR GAME. If you ask him to play game that is so hard to understand, at the same time you dont teach him how to play, and you expect him to win, then how are he going to play it happily. At the end, he will feel that you are over the limit, he might think that you only know how to scold people and ask people to bring you benefits, but you don't want to do anything.
But if you teach him how to play that certain game (to do that certain work), willing to accept any mistakes he made, and always monitor and discuss any difficulties he face, then that game will become so much interesting for him. If you asked me to play capitalism II without i first learn how to play that hard game, and you get angry when I lose the game, then how are you going to find me motivated paying the game? Now that I already studied the game, and you always give me support to play that game, and very willing if I lose that game, than, I will feel appreciated, I will find that game very interesting and I will play it again and again for my self satisfaction and for you until I become expert in it..
Delegating jobs is a method to increase job enrichment (one of the component of motivation in employees), suitable for people of theory Y by McGregor and recommended in supplying employees with self-actualization (Maslo Hierarchy of needs). However if jobs are badly delegated, the other way round would happened. Employees might rebel and cause the communication barrier between subordinates and manager.
So, whenever you delegate jobs, do imagine a specialist doctor on operating table teaching his intern doctor on operation. That's the real meaning of delegating job.
